JBAR UPDATE:
The Story of Chachito, Miss Winky and Chucha and their journey to Canada for adoption with Valerie and her mom, Betty (who is an amazing 90 years young). Dr. Malcolm Macartney from Mackenzie Veterinary Services Clinic received Miss Winkie and Chachito in Victoria for adoption.
“Sarah picked us up and then we proceeded to Lacy's to pick up Miss Winky and Cachito. We drove without incident to Puerto Vallarta and stopped at Costco where they had nice grass for the dogs to relieve themselves. Poor Miss Winky lost her breakfast in her kennel so we cleaned it up. I remembered two years ago when I had to clean a kennel in the Seattle airport of poop, pea and upchuck so I went and bought some rubber gloves. Sarah said she would give them to you. Not only was our flight changed in time but we landed in San Francisco in the cold and damp. We had to wait for the dogs to be brought out quite awhile but finally loaded everything on three carts. The Alaska Airlines gal told us she would direct us to an area where the dogs could be let out of their kennels but she disappeared once we were out of Customs. We had to carry on checking the dogs in again where an inspector had to look in the kennels. Cachito was the "crier” in the group so I cuddled him a little bit before we left for our gate. We made it just in time to get on the plane. We received the tickets that said "Relax we are on board" for the animals and we both smiled. The plane was late in to Seattle but we didn't have to do customs; even so it was a juggle with our carry on luggage and the kennels to get up to the Customer Service Desk to find out which hotel we would be going to. After many phone calls later we finally had a place to go to--the Renton Holiday Inn.

Betty with all three dogs: Chucha,Cachito and Miss Winky, spending
a night in a hotel room in Seattle on the way to Victoria
Mum all this time is riding in a wheelchair and the young man took her right down to the pick up point for the hotels and left the chair for her to sit in. Man was it cold down there. We must have waited half an hour for the bus to the hotel. Again I had to hold Cachito as he was crying so much. We got to the hotel around midnight and I took the dogs for a walk around the parking lot looking for grass and believe it or not I found some. I had Chucha on one side of me on the bed and Miss Winkie on the other; Cachito slept on the floor. We fell asleep immediately only to hear the phone ring telling us it was time to get up (I think we had about 4 hours sleep). Once again we went for a walk in the freezing cold to find the grass patch and then on to the airport. Our flight left at 7:55 a.m. with only 8 people on board and three dogs in the hold. Of course we were the last ones through Customs but the agent helped us with one of our three carts. They didn't even look at the dog's documents and there was no fee for bringing the dogs into the country.

Safely home in Victoria
My brother was there to greet us and helped load everything in his truck. Chucha sat on my knee for the ride in as we couldn't fit all three kennels in the back of the cab. The lawn had been cut the day before and the dogs all had green feet from being in the backyard. but enjoyed the grass. Mum and I walked the tres amigas and my two dogs down to Starbucks as it was nice and sunny and sat on the patio for a coffee--we created quite a stir in the old neighbourhood with 5 dogs.

Meeting new friends at Malcolm's clinic
At 2 p.m. I took the tres amigas to see Malcolm--they were excited to go for a car ride. The receptionist took Miss Winky right away to her new owner the Office Manager, Sandy and then Chucha and Cachito and I were invited into the back room. Great excitement, we took pictures and then Malcolm took blood samples and Chucha got her nails done too.
It has been so cold that Chucha also wears a sweater in the house. We had a great wind storm to welcome us back and several more windy days this week. Hope all is well in Los Ayala, Guayabitos and La Penita. We miss you guys. Take care,”

“The three dogs arrived safely and are doing very well in their new homes. Winky is having a blast with Sandy (our office manager) and her family, and she is being spoiled. Sandy says Miss Winky is cold here, so she puts a coat on her on chilly days.
Cachito similarly is settling into her foster home with our receptionist who has two small dogs. She says that Cachito is the perfect dog, friendly, starting to play, walks well on the leash and I think we may have found her a permanent home with my cousin who lives in Calgary.. we are working on this. I xrayed his pelvis and he definitely had a broken pelvis and it has healed but crookedly. Shouldn't affect his life much in the long run but he won't ever be a dog you take with you jogging.
Cucha is with Valerie who I think is finding a home for her with a close friend.”
Lacy’s Corner: a week in the life of our JBAR animal rescuer
April 1st
Both of the dogs we are treating for the genital cancer are responding well. Isabelle who is for adoption, needs only one more treatment and I will take pictures of her. She is a beautiful terrier. The french poodle male who is owned by a wonderful family in La Colonia is on his third treatment and the tumor is very small now. He will get two more treatments.
I have been taking dog food to a very skinny dog that we sterilized at the last clinic. Once a week I drop off a gallon ziplock full. Now when he sees my car he starts jumping in the air. He knows he is going to get fed. He looks much better. When I leave for the summer I will try to get someone to continue the feeding.
We have two small kittens for adoption at Celia's. Celia is getting them to eat cat food now. They have not yet been sterilized. They are about seven weeks old.

At the present Celia has plenty of food but I need to try and get her some puppy food. She has four puppies and someone left in a box in front of her house.
Three kittens for adoption will be taken to Bucerias on Wednesday to be sterilized along with three or four dogs. We also have the dog that just finished cancer treatment. She is sterilized and so sweet and fully recovered from the treatments. I call her Isabelle. The four puppies are only about five weeks old and two young to sterilize but really cute.
I have been treating several street animals for mange. All four have nearly gotten their hair back.
That's it for now.

I took eight animals to Bucerias today which included our three puppies for adoption. Antonio, Vet, said the puppies are barely six weeks old. The others were sterilized. There is another clinic in Bucerias May 5 to 8 and I can not haul animals since I will be leaving at this time. I hope someone can help. We have four more kittens at Celias that need to be sterilized (another box drop off). Perhaps someone can help by taking these three puppies and the four kittens to the May clinic,
I will be getting vaccinations from Eladio tomorrow for the puppies and for Pomeseno.

“Peaches was living on the beach in Lo de Marcos when we first met her in December 2009. Our visitors who were staying near the same section of beach began enjoying her company and giving her the love and attention she was craving. Just as our visitors were ending their stay here, Peaches was coming into her first heat. Luckily there was an opening at the clinic in Sayulita the following week so we kept her until she recovered. She has been with us since. She is affectionate, frisky and likes to please. She loves to run, is gentle with children and does well with most dogs. If our cat were friendlier, Peaches would love to play with her too. When confronted by aggressive dogs, she runs away. We have her sleep inside at night so that she doesn’t feel responsible for protecting our entire hillside. She is up to date on vaccinations.”
