Laguna de Santa María - a crater lake near Tepic

Write e-mail Print PDF

Close enough for a day trip from our area, but also suitable for a stay of a couple of days, is the beautiful volcanic crater lake Laguna de Santa María.  Natural beauty and tranquility are the main appeal here.  There are no telephones, television or Internet access.

Some of the animals which live here

OK, we know that some of this will scare some of you, but we really hope to set your minds at ease.  Eventually.  Just keep in mind that you'll probably never see most of the animals mentioned below unless you live here or you routinely wander off into places most tourists don't go.

Native Plants of the Jaltemba Bay area

I love finding wild plants I haven't seen before.  In southwestern Ontario I had many reference books to help me to identify them, but here in Nayarit there is little to help me other than long, usually futile searches on the Internet.

After years of intermittent research and much photography, these pages are my incipient flora of the area which will help you to identify and learn something about some of the plants near Jaltemba Bay.

Up the Monteon creek

A swimming hole in the Monteon creek

Last hot, hot summer, Bruce and I took up on an invite from Lenor and Terry Coomber to join with Dawn and Brian Blevings for a trip to the swimming holes up El Monteon Creek.  We had a nice day bobbing around in one of the many pools that people have scooped out of the gravel creek-bed.  We gorged from coolers full of snacks and icy beverages.  We napped on big sunny boulders and marveled at the variety of butterflies that came fluttering by us.  This creek, running cool and clear through the thick, tropical forest seemed to invite further upstream exploration, but it would be several months before I returned.

Chiggers ate my dog

Write e-mail Print PDF

Doctor,

I took my dog down the dump road after reading Tom Plattenberger's essay lately.  My husband and I were lucky enough not to get chiggers.  But my 14-pound 13-year-old dachshund did!  She's been washed in soapy hot water but not until one day later when I noticed her scratching.  We ourselves have also washed our clothes and linens and still no signs of chiggers on us.

Is there something I can ask for at a Vet's down here to treat/kill the chiggers and/or relieve her itching?

Regards,
Mary in San Pancho
